Rome
Discovered in the 1820s along the Ohio river, the fruit has a tough,
smooth skin and the flesh is sweet with a tinge of yellow and green
coloring. Because the fruit is very firm it has an excellent
storage and shelf life. The qualities that have made the Rome
popular are more easily discovered in the oven than eaten fresh.
It has gained an excellent reputation as a baking apple because
of its ability to retain its flavor and shape.
Rome ripens in mid October.
