County Line Orchard

Educational School Field Trips

County Line Orchard is the leader of orchard tours in the Chicagoland area. In 2006, almost 40,000 students, teachers and chaperones visited our orchard for an educational and fun field trip. Over 95% of those teachers have already made reservations to come again this year.

OBJECTIVE:

County Line Orchard's tour guides will provide an enjoyable educational tour, especially designed for children ages 3 through 3rd grade. Children will be given age-appropriate lessons on photosynthesis, pollination, honey-making (by bees!), apple harvesting and apple handling. This fun- filled tour gives children an opportunity to learn while having a good time.

RESERVATIONS / MORE INFORMATION

Send an email to jeanette@countylineorchard.com, or call 219-947-4477,, Monday through Friday 9 to 5.

PROGRAM:

The children (and accompanying adults) will:
  • Enjoy a ride through our 40 acre orchard on our tractor-drawn wagon (our "picker-people-picker-upper").
  • Pick about 2 pounds of fresh, crisp apples -OR- pick their own pumpkin from our pumpkin patch (depending upon the date of your visit and your preference.)
  • See honeybees at work only inches away through our specially built glass beehive, and learn about the importance of bees in growing food.
  • Tour our apple-packing barn where visitors walk along a safe, elevated platform overlooking our machine that washes, dries and sorts the apples by size.
  • Visit our 'tree lab' to learn about photosynthesis. (Do you know how many leaves it takes to make one apple?)
  • Enjoy a sample of our fresh and delicious pasteurized apple cider.

ALSO:

Everyone can visit the following attractions before or after their tour:
  • Visit our farm animals, including our goats that climb up into the trees.
  • Visit Chick-ville, where visitors can watch chicks hatching out of their eggs, then see what they look like when they are just days old and fuzzy.

LUNCH:

You are welcome to bring bag lunches and eat in our picnic area. We have lots of picnic tables, some under shelter, some not. Or, ask about our hot dog or chicken lunches.

TIME:

The tour lasts for Eighty minutes. Tours start at 9:15, 10:35, 11:55, and 1:15.

TAKE HOME:

  • A bag of apples or a pumpkin that they have picked.
  • Knowledge about how apples grow and the work of an orchard.
  • An understanding of the relationship of honeybees to an orchard.
  • A note to parents to stimulate conversation about the visit and a family coupon good for their next visit.
  • Lots of great memories and new knowledge.
